MY MOTHER WAS WRONG ABOUT SPINACH
Friday, May 18 2012
One of the great joys of getting older, and there is at least one joy involved in this grueling process, is discovering that you were right all the time. I try not to boast here because, well, that's just the kind of person I am. And, I'm not going... Read more...

I'll admit that the only comic books I've ever read are a couple of Care Bears issues from the early 1990s. I know that there are a lot of passionate comic book fans out there, but also there's a lot of us who just go to the movies without the... Read more...

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

When my wife invited me to go with her to the gym I thought it was a good idea. When she informed me that we must rise at 4:30AM and that we would be participating in a cardiac spinning class I didn't even blink. How hard could it actually be? I strolled into the gym, my cycling shorts barely able to contain my bravado. The class was led by a lean, athletic woman with the body fat of a celery stick. She casually introduced herself and set me up on my bike. She made small talk with others and se ... Read more...

I'm getting a little weary of vampires' popularity. I mean, Dracula is one of my favorite books, but there is such a thing as overexposure. I think I'm wearier of saccharine, supposedly-epic romances though, so given the choice between Fright Night and One Day, I opted for the vampires. In Fright Night, Charlie (Anton Yelchin) has some newfound popularity and a pretty girlfriend, Amy (Imogen Poots), so he's hesitant to believe his nerdy friend Ed when he starts claiming that there's a vampire i ... It's not the size of one's head that counts...it's what's in it. No PewI went to a service at a new church today and it didn't have the traditional style benches. Instead, they had padded chairs. Could it be that the parishioners don't want to sit in their own phew? Cyber and the BarbersAs my barber, Skip, was clipping me, he began to discuss Cyber Monday."Why do they call it Cyber Monday?" I asked."It's the day you can find all kinds of good deals on the internet.""Okay, but what does the wor ... Read more...

AT THE MOVIES WITH KASEY BUTCHERWhat would happen if aliens looking for gold invaded the old west? How would a bunch of cowboys handle a problem they couldn't lasso, shoot, or drink away? How would they react to UFOs in a world before airplanes? Cowboys & Aliens takes the well-loved formula behind western movies and makes aliens the bad guys. The result could have been terrible, but instead the filmmakers created a strange but hugely entertaining movie. Cowboys & Aliens opens on Jake Lonergan (Daniel Craig) waking up in the d ... Folks, I have good news and bad news. Since the world didn't end, as some naysayer predicted, I guess you're still stuck with me. Sorry about your luck. The Biggest Loser? I just read Notre Dame paid their ex-football coach, Charlie Weis, one of the worst, if not the worst, coach in the history of their program, (35 losses~27wins), a termination fee of $6,638,403. Now tell me folks, who in the heck is the biggest loser, Charlie, or the person responsible for this fiasco? Even though his record ... Read more...

I remember finishing the last book in the Harry Potter series and sitting on my bed for a long time afterward, unable to grasp that the books I had grown up loving and devouring in one sitting were now over. "At least there's still the movies," I told myself. As the conclusion of the film series approached, I asked a friend of mine who is a counselor if I could schedule appointments for Post Harry Potter Stress Disorder therapy. After seeing the final movie, however, I wasn't sad at all. Instead ... Read more...
