One of Indiana Tech’s finest basketball players and the first person inducted into Tech’s Sports Hall of Fame died Thursday, April 18, 2002. He was the only Fort Wayne College basketball player to be drafted by the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons. At 6-2 he was too small to be a forward or center and not quick enough to be a pro guard. He did survive late cuts.
As the basketball official scorer I would turn Tech’s basketball scores in to the Journal Gazette late at night. Once I turned in his game stats. I remember the U.P. had him listed one week on the top ten scorers in the nation. This was quickly deleted when U.P. found out about Tech: a very small college, not a division one, and playing an independent schedule.
One thing I remember about Lloyd. He told me when the game starts he tests the officials to see how much he could get away with. He then adjusted himself to the officiating. Very good advice for basketball players.
Fort Wayne will miss Lloyd Doehrmann.
