GARDEN PARTY (From Carol Ver Wiebe for Unitarian Universalist Congregation) Calling all gardeners! Two noted gardening authors will be coming to Fort Wayne for the third annual Garden Party on Saturday, May 18. The daylong event will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 5310 Old Mill Road in Fort Wayne.
Landscape designer Ezra Haggard, author of “Shrubs, Trees and Roses for Midwest Gardens,” will be making a presentation on ornamental trees, shrubs and roses that are suitable for the Fort Wayne climate, including those that are low maintenance and ideal for smaller gardens. Some of his most useful information, however, can come in the form of his unexpected tips on plant combinations.
Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp of Indianapolis is a self-taught gardener with more than 20 years of Hoosier gardening experience. She is the co-author of “The Indiana Gardener’s Guide,” a 400-plus page book that features annuals, bulbs, groundcovers, perennials, trees, shrubs and herbs. Sharp is an advanced master gardener, has written a weekly gardening column for the Indianapolis Star and has hosted a gardening radio program on WMYS-AM. Her morning presentation will focus on flowering plants for the Hoosier landscape.
Both authors will be available that day for book signings. Their books will also be available for sale. In addition to the noted authors, a morning and afternoon group of mini-sessions has been scheduled. Topics include: landscape design, container gardening, edible flowers, hosta gardening and cut-flower arranging. Food, prizes and a silent auction will also take place.
The ticket price includes a sit-down gourmet lunch and morning tea.
Vendors with goods for sale at the Garden Party include Neuhouser Nursery and Gifts, Little Professor Book Co., Old Church Pottery, Summer House Herb Farm, The Container Studio and others. Tickets for the Garden Party are $30 through the end of April and $35 May 1 though May 10. Space is limited, with sell-outs the last two years. To order tickets, send the number of tickets requested, your name, mailing address and phone number and a check payable to UUCFW (Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fort Wayne), to Garden Party, 5310 Old Mill Road, Fort Wayne IN 46807-3017. Your cancelled check will be your confirmation. You will be notified of a sell-out. More information can be obtained by calling 744-1867.
