On Friday September 6, 2002, together with Circle of Faith, Hot 107.9, WAJI 95.1 and News Channel 15, I announced the official observances in celebration of our democracy and in tribute to those whose lives were lost on September 11, 2001.
I welcome this opportunity for our community to come together to honor the memory of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack on our country. We also remember the values of tolerance, understanding and unity as we look forward together. It is our individual responsibility to ask ourselves how we each can contribute to making our city, state and country safer, stronger and more peaceful.
Two of the main events scheduled are: memorial services conducted by the Fort Wayne Fire Department at Fire Station #1, 419 East Main Street from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m.; and “Peace, Prayers and Patriotism” at Foellinger Theatre in Franke Park, starting at 6 p.m. “Peace, Prayers and Patriotism” is a community-wide forum that will include a patriotic program and salute to public servants and an interfaith worship service.
As part of Fort Wayne’s observances for 9/11, I am calling for a citywide moment of silence at 10:43 a.m. followed by the church bells from all city churches ringing for peace at 10:45 a.m.
I also announced that September 11 –17, 2002 would be declared as “Participate Fort Wayne” Week. Participate Fort Wayne Week will run in conjunction with National Civic Participation Week, which was designated by the United States Senate and is sponsored by a national organization known as Participate America.
Participate Fort Wayne Week will showcase American democracy and civic participation, honor the courageous spirit of our citizens and pay tribute to those we lost on 9/11/01. I invite all Fort Wayne citizens to join in the national pledge to:
volunteer and contribute time, talent or available resources to any worthy cause;
communicate, work to solve problems together and keep an open dialogue with elected officials at all levels of government; and
vote with knowledge, conviction and purpose.
