The Key to God’s Heart by Charles F. Stanley
I was only in the first grade, but I still remember the key that unlocked the door to my house. It was one of those long, black keys, and after I left in the morning, I would hide it under a rock so nobody but my mother and I knew where it was.
I remember sometimes coming home in the afternoon and wondering if the key was still there. Then I recall moving the rock and experiencing a tremendous sense of relief when I spotted the key. What made that key so important to me was that it was the key to our home. It was the key to the place where my mother and I lived—where my needs were met and where our belongings were. It was where I felt my mother’s love and care for me.
More than likely, you also have keys in your life—keys to your house, your car, or your desk. But have you ever thought about having the key to somebody’s heart, you know how to reach what is inside. You know how to move them toward you, and you know something about how they feel.
Some people may think the key is love, faith, or service; however, I want to tell you that the key to God’s heart is obedience. Sadly, many people fail to realize this. Even more people will proclaim that they don’t like the idea of obedience being the key to God’s heart, but it is. Obedience should be a priority in the life of anyone who desires to know God and please Him. Even though obedience can be difficult and sometimes painful, it is what God asks of us. Obedience is always the right choice, with no exceptions.
So as we study why and how God wants us to be obedient to Him, I urge you to keep one very important verse of Scripture in mind. John 14:23 says, “(Jesus) answered and said to him, ‘If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him.'” Jesus is speaking of obedience, the most overriding, important principle in our relationship with God.
May the Lord bless you with insight and understanding.
