IN KEEPING WITH OUR MISSION
As Wayne Township Trustee, I am proud to have the support of an incredible staff that is always willing to go beyond the common expectations of Township Government. Indiana statutes mandate Township Offices to provide relief to those individuals whose income does not meet their basic necessities. Social Security and SSI recipients face a number of challenging situations not the least of which is financial management. We believe in taking a proactive approach, which will greatly reduce the need for township funds. By providing a payee service that provides the stability of sound financial management, many potential recipient of your tax dollars are able to be self sufficient with the right amount of financial counseling.
Wayne Township started the program in 2001 with one payee. The program has assisted forty-nine participants, thirty-seven active to date. This is a free service to Wayne Township residents. This program assists the participants with housing, furniture and applications for assistance through other agencies.
The Payee participants come into the Wayne Township Office weekly to meet with their representative payee to review any transaction made on their behalf, and to receive their budget allotment.
Financial records of all payee participants are kept separately, reconciled monthly, and there is a complete auditing of their account by the Indiana State Board of Accounts.
In order to participate in the Payee Program, individuals must reside in Wayne Township, receive Social Security benefits, and be unable to manage their own financial affairs. Individuals do not have to be recipients of the Wayne Township’s Poor Relief assistance.

Marty Shaner writes, “Last year, I found myself in serious financial difficulty. I was referred to the Wayne Township trustee’s office for its payee assistance program. At first, I was very skeptical, but I went in with an open mind. The people there treated me with respect and dignity. They were very courteous and understanding about my problems. They helped me get my bills caught up, and they put me on a budget. Today, my bills are up to date, and I have some money in the bank. This has enabled me to start my life over, with positive hopes for the future. My sincere thanks to Matthew Schomburg, Wayne Township Trustee.”
Vernon Williams writes, “This program has insured that my income is budgeted on consistent basis. Please continue to provide the best possible services to the people who are unable to provide for their basic needs.
