Several Waynedale residents are members of Memorial Park Middle School’s Jazz Band known as “Big Noise!” Big Noise has been invited to participate in North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison, Texas on April 4-6th. Auditions were by compact disc recordings or videotapes and Memorial Park’s musicians were the only middle school jazz band in the United States selected to participate. All other groups at the festival are high school or college groups. The festival includes having the students perform during the day and attend professional jazz musician’s performances at night.
Big Noise is a 31-member ensemble directed by Donna Sevcovic. They compete in various regional and national jazz competitions, release a compact disc recording at the end of each school year, and have been honored by Down Beat Magazine.
Waynedale area musicians who are members of Big Noise include: Kenneth Aschliman of Winterset Addition (who delivers The Waynedale News), Noe Flores and Jethro McConnell of Indian Village Addition, Andrew Lamping of Stephens Drive and Austin and Alex Steenman of Mariner’s Ridge Addition.
