Elmhurst 27, Dwenger 23. If you beat the best, you are the best.
I know, all you naysayers out there will be saying, “It was a fluke”, or, “It won’t happen again,” but truth is, for seven days the Elmhurst Trojan’s are the best team in Class 4A football. Will it last for 14 days? 21 days? A whole season?
For those of us who have been following EHS football, this is not totally unexpected. We watched last year as the Trojans would put together a good offensive drive to score a touchdown, or they would put up a great defensive stand to stop a hard driving offense, but then a mistake would set them back. Last season was a compilation of a lot of individual celebrations. They were making progress, but they just couldn’t put it all together for four quarters.
This year had started out iffy at best. One of their stars, James Hardy was in an auto accident just prior to the two-a-day workouts and it was unknown if he would be ready for the season. A lot of the Trojans were finishing up summer jobs and there just weren’t as many bodies out in that hot August sun as coach would have liked. So Norfleet did what all good coaches do, they take the players they have and go from there. After all, you can only play eleven players at a time.
Now, the whole world has changed. Now, all the rest of the coaches out there are going to have to get out their erasers and erase the ‘W’ they had on their schedules for the Elmhurst game. Now they are going to have to earn the win against EHS, because these guys have a new attitude. These guys won’t go away easy. These guys have a chip on their shoulder and there’s liable to be a lot of payback for the last 64 games.
It will no doubt be tough. They need to put this win in their back pocket, and start preparing for the next game. It is a very short time between Fridays when you’re in the Class 4A-football program. Each week brings another team, another riddle to solve, and another challenge. From “Worst to First”, and it only took 4 quarters of football on Friday, August 22, 2003.
