The Lady Generals are lead by first-year Head Coach Faith Purkiser. It was hot and muggy, Monday night, September 12 in the Wayne High School gymnasium. The Wayne Lady Generals were pitted against the Heritage Patriots coached by Jay Lahrman.

In the old days, volleyball used to be a weekend, beer drinking kind of game, but new rules and new attitudes have turned this sport into a special type of athletic activity.

One of the fans had on a shirt that read, “Volleyball is just like football, hits, crushes, spikes…only tougher.”

The girls came onto the floor for their pre-game warm-up to hard rock music and like the song says; there was whole lot of shaking going on. The warm-up routine was choreographed to get everyone geared up for an exciting competition.

The girls play by ‘Rally Rules’, which speeds up the game and provides a more interesting type of contest. Each of the games are played to 25 points but you don’t need to win by two. Also, when the ball hits the net on the serve and goes over it is played as a live ball. They play the best 3 out of five games to determine a winner. If the set goes to five games then the final game is to 15 and the “win by 2” rule goes into effect. Each game takes about 20 minutes and it was a short night for the Lady Generals as they fell to the Heritage girls, 3-0.

Wayne faired much better in their next competition against North, on Tuesday, September 13, beating the Lady Redskins 3-2. Wayne’s next away game is September 27, 6pm against Concordia and their next home game is September 29, 6pm against Dwenger.
