SMOKE ON THE WIND

Needless to say the world is changing. We can all see and feel the effects of a changing world. Things have certainly changed since I was a kid. I can recall going to the neighborhood grocer and telling him that my mother, Madeline Little Feather, was making soup for our family. Mr. Shepard would wrap up a nice big meaty soup bone and give it to me with a big smile and say “Enjoy!”

Oh, we all enjoyed Mom’s soup as we ate together as a family. The pot would sit in the middle of the table. After a thanksgiving prayer was offered, we were told to “dig in, but remember, what you take from the pot and put on your plate or in your bowl, you must eat.” I learned that lesson well. It was a time when we had spaghetti. I love spaghetti, and after eating a big portion, I dipped into the pot for a second helping. Before I had a chance to put it on my plate, Dad said (in German), “Be careful!” It still resonates with me today, every time I have spaghetti. But I’m more careful today in how much I put on my plate, because I don’t like sitting alone after everyone else has finished, eating cold spaghetti!

Be careful, and God help you if you must eat cold spaghetti.
