YOUNG AUTHOR KICKOFF

St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth School hosted visiting writer and illustrator for Young Author KickoffOn November 10, St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth School hosted a visiting writer and illustrator for the Young Author Kickoff, which inspires students to write and illustrate a short book. The visiting writer and illustrator made presentations to the kindergarten through 5th grade classes at the St. Elizabeth campus.

The writer and illustrator were Holly Niner and Marcia Gabet.

Holly Niner is the author of two books, “Mr. Worry: A Story about OCD” and “I Can’t Stop: A Story about Tourette Syndrome,” both published by Albert Whitman & Co. Mrs. Niner has also written for Highlights for Children.

Marcia Gabet, a retired elementary school teacher, is an author and illustrator who has published six reproducible books with Teacher Created Materials of San Diego, California. Mrs. Gabet has also been published in Highlights for Children.

The visiting writer and illustrator visited St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth School as part of the Young Author Kickoff, which is meant to inspire students to write their own books and to enrich their writing and illustrating skills. New ideas that the students learned during the presentations by the visiting writer and illustrator will allow students to jump-start their own writing and illustrating.

For students in kindergarten through 3rd grade, Mrs. Niner discussed how a book idea goes through the different steps towards becoming a book. For grades 4 and 5, Mrs. Niner discussed how a writer weaves together character, setting, problem and resolution with action words and suspense.

Mrs. Gabet discussed illustrating a book and directed the students in an art project focusing on illustration.
