Enjoy beautiful wildflowers and a delicious brunch at the Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site on Saturday, May 5, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Take a stroll through the beautiful Wildflower Woods and adjacent Sower’s Woods as site staff showcases the wide array of native wildflowers that take center stage here every spring. After the walk, enjoy a delicious locally-prepared brunch.
Native wildflowers are very important in preserving the natural history of Indiana. Many of the flowers that Gene transplanted here no longer exist in the wild. For example, the Hooker’s orchid was last seen blooming ain the wild in 1969. Due to habitat destruction and invasive species, there is a smaller and smaller area where this plant and many others like the orchid could bloom. The importance of preservation and restoration will be discussed at the event.
The Wildflower Walk and Brunch is $20 per person and requires advance reservations by April 30. Please call 260.854.3790 to make your reservation. Tours of Gene Stratton-Porter’s Cabin in Wildflower Woods are available for an additional fee. All event proceeds are used for educational programming, maintenance and restoration of Gene’s gardens and for future special events at the Site.
