Honor Flight Northeast Indiana, sent 70 WWII veterans to Washington D.C., on Tuesday, May 22, at the Indiana Air National Guard, 122nd Fighter Wing, 3005 W Ferguson Rd, Fort Wayne, IN.
The veterans, volunteer guardians, and immediate family, gathered at the 122 FW at 6:00a.m. where breakfast was served provided by Air National Guard volunteers. Veterans and guardians started boarding the aircraft between 7:00-7:45a.m., with a projected 8:00a.m. take-off.
This was Honor Flight Northeast Indiana’s 70th flight. Community donations, fundraisers, and volunteer supporters allowed the group to continue the mission to honor Northeast Indiana’s veterans for all their sacrifices by flying them to Washington, DC to reflect at their memorials.
The age range of veterans on this flight is 85-95 years, with 15 veterans over the age of 90. A first for Honor Flight Northeast Indiana, husband and wife from Marion, Indiana shared in the experience together having served in the Navy and Army, respectively. With an estimated 1,500 WWII veterans dying every day in the USA we have to act quickly to serve those who would still like to have the opportunity to see this memorial that was built in their honor, and in the honor of their comrades who did not come home.
There are now approximately 130 on the waiting list to participate in the Honor Flight Northeast Indiana program. Honor Flight Northeast Indiana is one of three operating hubs in Indiana and new applications continue to arrive every week from beyond our region, so we continue to seek the support of the Northeast Indiana community and beyond. WWII veterans do not pay anything for this trip; they have given enough. All trips are funded by donations from individuals and private organizations in Northeast Indiana. The cost to send one veteran to see their Memorial is now approximately $650.
Ninety-five percent of all donations go directly towards the veterans’ trips. Honor Flight Northeast Indiana, Inc. is a volunteer, nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
