Nine Kingston Residence residents ranging in age 80 to 95 years proudly completed the Fort 4 Fitness Senior Marathon. The race began on Tuesday, June 26th at Parkview Field where the contestants registered and walked their initial 1/3 mile around the field concourse. Over the next 12 weeks, each participant was challenged to walk an average of two miles per week. As the race concluded on Friday, September 28, each participant was to have accumulated a total of 26 miles which equals a full marathon.
Many of these Kingston residents weren’t satisfied to walk only 26 miles. Activity Director Rachel Fox organized group walks around walking paths both inside and outside the community. Each resident’s daily steps were tracked and the majority of the walkers exceeded the necessary 26 miles over the 12-week period.
Betty King, who also walked last year, is the most senior participant at 95 years young. She stated, “This is a continuation of what I do all year long. Walking is a form of therapy for me. It makes me feel better all over.” Betty walked a total of 70 miles over the course of the Marathon.
This past Friday, the Kingston group celebrated the end of the Senior Marathon by walking around the outskirts of Parkview Field’s grassy baseball field and crossing the finish line at home base. Everyone also cheered on the children who competed in the Kid’s Marathon and finished Friday night as well.
Resident Jean Keuneke, 91, finished the race sporting an oxygen tank and a walker. “I did it last year and I was bound and determined I was going to do it again!” she emphatically said.
Daughter Doris walked alongside her mother, resident Marjorie Leath, 89, who was involved for the first time. Doris states, “This healthy event was such a positive effort. I really feel that the 12 weeks of walking improved Mom’s muscle strength and endurance.
It was a joy to see mom laughing and smiling so much. She was tickled pink watching the children and it was such fun to see all of us on the jumbo screen.”
Those who participated from Kingston Residence include Betty Baker, Audrey Diedrich, Bob Dove, Maxine Ford, Ginny Hambel, Jean Keuneke, Betty King, Marjorie Leath and Donna Ross. The five people in bold listing competed last year as well.
Congratulations to all the Kingston residents who accomplished the Fort 4 Fitness Senior Marathon!
