Boy Scout Troop 344 received a check from the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 241 to assist boys going to summer camp, to help buy camping equipment for the troop and to give boys a leg up on expenses if they can’t afford scouting. The ceremony was held at the American Legion Post 241, 7605 Bluffton Road here in Waynedale.
Commander Kevin Gwozdz presented Kevin Shadle with a check at the monthly SAL meeting. Assistant Scoutmaster Walt Pressler Jr. thanked S.A.L. for the generous donation and said, “Summer Camp is quite expensive and uniforms are required to attend summer camp. This money will help the boys tremendously. Attending annual summer camp at Camp Chief Little Turtle is one of the greatest experiences boys can have. It gives them a chance to earn required merit badges as well as some others they normally wouldn’t be exposed to such as canoeing, rowing, sailing, shotgun, rifle, muzzle loader, and wilderness survival.”
Walter himself is the father of Eagle Scout Brian Pressler and is the grandfather of two up and coming Boy Scouts who will one day become Eagles, “. . . if I have anything to say in the matter,” he said. Walt has been in scouting for over 32 years. He has held such positions as: Cub Master Pack 3344, Committee Chairman Troop 44, Chartered Representative Troop 44, Committee Member for Troop 344, as well as being an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 344. He also holds the position of Chaplain for the Sons of the Legion.
Troop 344 is sponsored by Waynedale UMC located at the corner of Church Street and Old Trail Road. Matt Johnson is the current Scoutmaster but couldn’t attend the ceremony due to prior commitments. Anyone wanting more information about the troop please call the church at 260-747-7424 during business hours.
