The Fort Wayne Breakfast Sertoma Club, in partnership with Carter Hearing Clinics, ENT Associates & The Hearing Center, and Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS), invites everyone to CELEBRATE SOUND Don’t Walk in Silence on May 17, 2014 at Foster Park at 10 AM.
Maybe you haven’t heard, but for 50 million Americans, hearing loss is a significant health issue. From newborn babies to senior citizens, hearing loss can impede learning, lead to social isolation, and even be life threatening.
That’s why Sertoma, one of America’s first service clubs, along with Hearing Charities of America, is sponsoring this walk to raise awareness and funds for hearing health. CELEBRATE SOUND Don’t Walk in Silence is being held in conjunction with the Better Hearing and Speech Month, an annual event each May when the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association raises awareness about communication disorders and promotes treatment that can improve the quality of life for those who experience problems with speaking, understanding, or hearing.
“With CELEBRATE SOUND Don’t Walk in Silence, we want to raise public awareness of hearing health issues. The number of people affected, the age ranges affected and the health implications are much broader than the general public might suspect,” said Fort Wayne Breakfast Sertoma Club walk chair Lee Ehinger. “But there are things that can be done. For instance, just through better education we can help prevent noise-induced hearing loss, erase public stigma about hearing loss, and make public spaces more accessible to those who use assistive devices.”
This year’s 5K walk/ 10K run begins at Foster Park Pavilion 1 and will take participants around the beautiful Fort Wayne park. Registration is just $20 and includes a t-shirt and the chance to win raffle prizes. Registration will be online at www.mycelebratesound.org. Registered participants can pick up their shirts and numbers at FWCS Anthis Career Center on Wednesday, May 14 and Thursday, May 15 from 5-8 p.m. Participants can check in at 9:00 a.m. before the walk officially begins at 10 a.m on May 17.
Those who want to join the celebration as a walker, sponsor or volunteer can call 260-492-0253 or visit www.mycelebratesound.org to register and learn more about this event.
Money raised by the Fort Wayne Breakfast Sertoma Club at this event will be used to fund both local and national hearing health projects. These include grants to local hearing health providers; college scholarships for hard of hearing and deaf students; scholarships for those pursuing graduate studies in speech-language pathology or audiology; awareness programs to prevent noise-induced hearing loss; and programs to promote better public accessibility for people using assistive hearing devices. A portion of the monies raised will be given to the local Fort Wayne schools for use in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program.
