Waynedale’s American Legion Post #241, AM VETS #33 and VFW #1421 honor our fallen heroes by placing American flags before the gravestones and niches of service members the Saturday prior to Memorial Day weekend.
This tradition, known as “flags in,” has been conducted annually at both Arlington National Cemetery and the U. S. Soldier’s and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery since The Old Guard (the 3rd U.S. Infantry) was designated as the Army’s official ceremony unit in 1948.
In Waynedale, as part of our yearly memorial activity, veterans, families of veterans and children will do the same. Each grave with a military notation, will receive an American flag at the Prairie Grove Cemetery on Old Trail Road. The flags are donated by the Allen County Council for Veterans.
“The Parade is Coming!”
On Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2014 Old Trail Road will once again be lined with a crowd of people holding high the American Flag.
This year’s Memorial Day Parade will begin at 9am starting from the Waynedale United Methodist Church on the corner of Church Street and Old Trail Road.
Come join in the fun as the band marches, the twirlers twirl batons, kids show off decorated bikes and trikes and the more mature generation rolls their antique cars and trucks down Old Trail Road towards Prairie Grove Cemetery. Mr. Mike Flannery, Commander of VFW Post #1421, will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the gathering at Prairie Grove.
As the roar of the fire engines die down and the last float passes, everyone will gather at Prairie Grove Cemetery for the heartfelt Military Ceremony. Wayne High School as well as local military officials will be honoring those that have been lost. Roll call, 21-gun salute and taps will be a part of the ceremony, as well as a wreath presentation to honor all those that gave their lives that we might keep our freedom.
Our community can be proud of the local military organizations that sponsor this parade year after year. Just as we can be proud of the many people that come to show support for our great country.
