Maribeth Harrell, who grew up in Fort Wayne, was recently named Miss Rodeo Indiana 2016 in San Antonio, Texas. She will compete for the title of Miss Rodeo America in the national pageant November 27-December 3 in Las Vegas.
Harrell, 24, started riding horses at age 9 and has trained and competed locally and nationally in jumping, western pleasure, barrel racing and reining. She is a graduate of South Side High School and attended IPFW, where she was a competing member of the Equestrian Team for two years through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. She later transferred to South Dakota State University, where she earned a degree in English education. She now lives in Wawaka, Indiana, and is an ESL teacher in Elkhart.
As Miss Rodeo Indiana, Harrell plans to travel 50,000 miles through 15 states to promote professional rodeo. She will attend events including therapeutic riding horse shows, stock shows, horse expos, county and state fairs, as well as visiting elementary schools. She plans to use social media to attract followers.
