SAINT ALOYSIUS CEMETERY TO HOST WREATH – LAYING HONORING FALLEN SERVICE MEMBERS

Wreaths Across America St. AloysiusSaint Aloysius Cemetery, an official Wreaths Across America (WAA) location, will host a wreath-laying ceremony, joining more than 1,000 other locations across the country for National Wreaths Across America Day. Here in Fort Wayne there are 60 grave sites at St. Aloysius and 7,000 in Lindenwood Cemetery where the wreaths will be placed.

This year’s ceremony at St. Aloysius is coordinated and led by local volunteers, American Legion Post #241 Honor Guard and Civil Air Patrol Commander Anthony G. Vining.

The Saint Aloysius location has raised over $750 to place more than 60 wreaths on the headstones of our fallen service members. A small gift of $15, or donation in any amount, honors a fallen hero and their sacrifice. There is limited time to donate for this year’s wreaths. Donations close on Saturday, December 3rd. However, after December 3rd your donation would go towards next year’s wreath. To donate/purchase a wreath go to wreathsacrossamerica.org. It is at this site that you can select the location you wish to have your wreath placed. If you have further questions please contact TVining@CapGlrIn201.com.

The wreath-honoring project started with 1000 leftover wreaths that were sent to Arlington National Cemetery as a donation. After years of receiving an over abundance of wreaths, Arlington decided to share the idea and branched out to locations including Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne. CAP 1st Lt. Anthony G. Vining became involved in the project in 2011 and extended it to St. Aloysius a couple years ago.

Commander Vining recalls, “It is said that a person dies twice. Once when they leave the physical life and again the last time their name is spoken on earth.” It is his mission that this never happens to a veteran. This annual event seeks to further the WAA mission of Remember, Honor, Teach, ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures.

The Waynedale area wreath-laying event is scheduled for Saturday, December 17, 2016 beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Saint Aloysius Cemetery, 14607 Bluffton Road, Yoder, Indiana. The Lindenwood Cemetery ceremony will begin at noon.
