“The best food yet!” That comment was overheard more than once during the 9th Annual Taste of Waynedale. With several new restaurants joining the lineup amid the favorites, there was a large variety of delicious food from which to choose.
You really could “have it all”. From Nine Mile’s Arkansas Green Beans, Mac Attacks from Shigs ‘n Pit, Seafood Ravioli from Casa, Potato Soup from Curley’s, Nachos from Bandido’s, Tucano’s Bacon Wrapped Turkey, Hunan Chicken from China Palace, The Stand’s famous Coney dogs or Pizza Hut fresh pizza.
Did you happen to save room for dessert? There was Fort Wayne Chocolate Fountain, Culver’s custard, Azar’s famous strawberry pie, Hall’s German Chocolate Cake and cupcakes from Waynedale Bakery.
Naturally, there were beverages to compliment all the great food. Sharing Peace Café offered flavored coffees, The Bluebird Restaurant served their fresh squeezed OJ, and Mad Anthony’s Brewery and Belmont Liquors provided popular adult beverage samples of craft beers and wine.
New restaurants this year included Lafogata serving Chicken Fajitas, Miami Grill’s fresh wraps, Krystal’s Café (part of Post #241, open to the public) served chicken wings and fish and Rise’n Roll brought their “Amish Crack” as it is so lovingly referred to. Rise’n Roll owner Phil Reiman states, “This was a really positive event, a great way to give back and reach a large quantity of people with our product.”
The big upset of the night was the vote for Popular Choice. Long time winner Nine Mile Restaurant was unseated by Hill’s Market. There was a lot of good-natured ribbing between the two throughout the night as Hill’s proclaimed, “You are going down this year!” And their prediction proved to be true.
Even with over 600 people attending, the crowd was well distributed. According to organizer Camille Garrison, Marketing Director with Kingston Residence, “This is one of our favorite events to sponsor. Each year we listen to suggestions and we have added more seating which created more open space to move about. Our vendors are enthusiastic, the community always supports our fundraising efforts and it is a wonderful opportunity to socialize with your friends and neighbors.”
Kingston’s Taste of Waynedale event is also the first to kick off official fundraising for the Waynedale Corridor Project. Committee Chair, Alex Cornwell explains, “This is a project lead by The City of Fort Wayne Community Development and The Waynedale Business Chamber. We have many goals including improved accessibility with sidewalk repairs and additions, Waynedale branding with banners and signs and unified landscaping at storefronts & street corners. Overall we want to beautify, improve & unify Waynedale!”
Next year will celebrate 10 years of hosting the popular Waynedale event. To date, Kingston has raised $73,500 for charity. Garrison states, “We will continue to add to the event to keep it fresh and fun. We are evaluating a “fresh selections” area where people with special diet concerns can graze from and not have to be tempted by sweets. They can still attend and support the community and our charities but not feel guilty about over consuming. Because ultimately, that is really what this is all about, raising money for our charities.”
Both Honor Flight Northeast Indiana and the Waynedale Corridor will each receive $3,750. Honor Flight President Dennis Covert states, “Support of the Taste of Waynedale not only provides financial support to HFNEI, which enables us to continue our mission of transporting veterans to Washington, D.C. to view the various memorials, but it also enables local restaurants and food service companies to showcase their products and services. It is a win-win-win situation for all involved and HFNEI is grateful to Kingston Healthcare for their support of HFNEI and local businesses.
So mark your calendars now, next year’s Kingston’s Taste of Waynedale will be held on Tuesday, March 20th. See you there!
